Exclusive Interview With Nigerian Architect - Tosin Oshinowo

It’s an honour to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story? How did you get to where you are today?

“I am a Lagos-based Nigerian architect and designer better known for my innovative Adunni chairs, expansive residential and commercial spaces, and insights into socially responsive approaches to urbanism.  Grounded in a deep respect for my Yoruba culture and history and coming from a markedly African context, My designs embody a contemporary perspective on the next generation of African design and afro-minimalism: a responsive reflection of the past, present, and future of architecture and design that prioritises sustainability, resilience, and poise. “

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

“There have been quite a few challenges but mostly gender-related. I’ve been very fortunate that where I have had opportunities, I have delivered beyond expectations, and with more completed projects, I have the chance to get more referrals. I’ve been very fortunate in this aspect.”

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

“I’m an architect and product designer. My work revolves around mainly creating innovative spatial solutions. My approach has a clear aesthetic language that is minimal. As such I tend to get clients who gravitate towards this design language. “

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

“Success is the journey, not the end goal. It’s important to enjoy the process and continue to evolve and grow along the way. That’s true success to me.”

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

“I guess I have already answered this above.”

What’s next for you?

“There is a lot on the pipeline, from interesting design collaborations to iconic building projects. None of which I can speak publicly at this time… but watch this space!”

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

“I’m most active on Instagram, which also has links to all my other platforms. @tosin.oshinowo
